Our Karaoke

Embark on a rich visual ethnography of community, passion, and personal experience, as five amatuer karaoke singers compete for two spots to represent the United States at the Karaoke World Championships.

Background:

Karaoke, meaning Empty Orchestra, is a social cultural activity that regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, class, body image, or religious affiliation brings people together and builds community. The Karaoke Machine was invented in the late 1970's in Japan.  Karaoke spread from Japan to South East Asia and Europe in the 1980's. In the early 1990's Karaoke appeared in Toronto, Canada and filtered across the United States. Karaoke remains a favorite night time activity to do with family, friends, coworkers,  a loved one, or a room full of strangers. Since the creation of the karaoke machine, the subculture of Karaoke League and Competitive Karaoke was formed. The Karaoke World Championships, a competitive event, has been around for 16 years and is the reason for this campaign and documentary Our Karaoke.
